Meet My Pet Project
For this week's Bring Me a Pumpkin craft event (finger crochet), I want to share about how I got started on the featured project several years ago. At my old job as a resident director, I found a problematic number of clothing items flooding hallways at the end of the year from students intending to give away the things they didn’t want to pack, but in reality increasing my hours as a not hourly paid employee of hauling their stuff to the thrift store or dumpster. Year after year, fines were handed all around, but there were already so many other pressures on students as the year wrapped up, that it just didn’t matter. They’d pay the fine, thanks. With much of the pile being t-shirts from clubs, events, etc, I watched a few YouTube tutorials on how to repurpose t-shirts into yarn, and how to finger crochet in a spiral, and came up with a new favorite hobby of making area rugs and baskets
But after I moved on to another job, I didn't have that many unwanted
t-shirts to use (a single rug can take at least 25). So that is when I
turned to Revival Boutique & Thrift. They graciously set aside
t-shirts that won't sell, so that I can bring them home, wash them, cut
them up, and continue to crochet.
I am now also taking others through this
process of prepping a t-shirt, discussing techniques and teaching a
basic crochet knot with no hook. It's really satisfying to see a finished project
come together fairly quickly from this method.
